caring for your extensions

One of the biggest things to keep in mind when caring for your hair extensions is that they do not behave like your natural hair because, well, they’re not. But that doesn’t mean that maintaining them has to require a ton of extra work. Eventually, your extensions will begin to feel natural and caring for them will become almost second nature. Below, I’ve listed out some of the most important steps that you can take to protect your investment and ensure the longevity of your hair going forward.

  • Brush your hair extensions thoroughly using an extensions safe brush (like a wet brush) several times per day. If you do not have a brush handy, you can use your fingers to gently remove tangles. Always start at the ends, working your way up towards the roots. Remember to gently hold your wefts in place while brushing to avoid snagging the attachment points.

  • Be sure to braid your extensions loosely before bed and sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.

  • Always dry your extensions thoroughly before sleeping. NEVER sleep on wet hair extensions.

  • Use a hair mask once weekly to hydrate and replenish your hair extensions. Apply the mask to your extensions only if your natural hair isn’t in need of the extra moisture. This will help to maintain the integrity of your hair.

  • Make sure to use a hair oil daily and apply generously from your mids to ends. You can work through with your fingers or brush in once applied.

  • Be sure to use a physical, mineral based sunscreen only and avoid direct contact with your extensions. Most chemical sunscreens contain several ingredients that can permanently discolor the hair.

  • Follow your recommended maintenance schedule.
